Chamunda Devi Temple, Haridwar (Uttarakhand)

Location & Overview

  • The temple is located in the holy city of Haridwar in Uttarakhand, India, atop the hill known as Neel Parvat (often spelt “Neel Parvat” or “Neel Parvat Hill”).
  • The hill forms part of the Sivalik range (southernmost chain of the Himalayas) and overlooks the city and the Ganga‑river valley.
  • The temple is dedicated to the goddess Chandi (also called Chandika) — a fierce form of the Divine Mother, closely associated with the form Chamunda (who slays demons).

2. Mythology & History

Mythological Legend:

  • The Puranic legend tells that the gods were overpowered by demon rulers Shumbha and Nishumbha. They prayed to the Divine Mother, who manifested as Chandi/Chandika. She created Chamunda from her rage, who slew the demon generals Chanda and Munda, and then Chandi defeated Shumbha and Nishumbha.
  • After the battle, Chandi (or Chamunda) is said to have rested on Neel Parvat, and the peaks near the temple are locally named after Shumbha and Nishumbha.

Historical Facts:

  • According to the temple’s Wikipedia entry, the present temple structure was built in 1929 by Suchat Singh, King of Kashmir, though an earlier shrine may date much earlier (the 8th century) as attributed to Adi Shankaracharya.
  • The temple is a popular pilgrimage site, especially during Navratri and other Shakti‑festivals.
