Chamunda Mata Temple, Jodhpur

2. History & Significance

Legend & Origins:

  • According to tradition, the idol of Chamunda Mata was originally in the old capital of Mandore.
  • In around 1460, Rao Jodha, founder of Jodhpur, brought the idol from Mandore to the site of Mehrangarh Fort and installed it there, making the temple a key protective shrine of the city and royal clan.

  • The temple has been the Isht Devi (adopted/cherished goddess) of the Rathore royal family of Jodhpur.
  • The goddess is regarded as the guardian deity of Jodhpur city and is worshipped by both royalty and common folk alike.

  • Within the fort complex: The temple lies at the southern edge; you may need to walk/climb within the fort structures.
